The Museum of Art was founded in 1927 at the initiative of the Russian sculptor Karelin A.A. Moreover, it was only in 1939 that the museum received the status of the Great Museum of Art of Turkmenistan. In 2006, the museum moved into a new building. The museum has a wide range of eclectic works of art; This includes more than 6,000 exhibits, drawings, sculptures and graphics by Turkmen and foreign artists.
Among the local artists there are such figures as A. Hajiyev, I. Ilishli, Klycheeva, Bayramova and S. Babikov. The museum also showcases the performance and development of carpets, bricks, water floors, and other arts.
