On January 5, 1998, in accordance with the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan No. 3479, the National Museum of Turkmenistan was established as a result of the merger of the National Museum of History and Ethnography of Turkmenistan and the Museum of Fine Arts of Turkmenistan. The museum opened on November 12, 1998. The museum consists of seven permanent galleries dedicated to the history, modern culture and ethnography of Turkmenistan.
By the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov dated February 21, 2007 No 8270, the construction of the Museum of the President of Turkmenistan and the Museum of Ethnography and Local History began on both sides of the National Museum. On May 14, 2009, by the Decree of the President, the National Museum of Turkmenistan was renamed the Main National Museum of Turkmenistan. On May 18, 2009, the opening ceremony of the Museum of Ethnography and Local History of the Main National Museum of Turkmenistan took place, and on June 29, 2009 – the Museum of the President of Turkmenistan. From 2009 to 2013, it was named the main national museum of Turkmenistan.
In April 2013, it became part of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan and was renamed.
The museum has more than 130,000 exhibits. The museum contains thousands of archaeological sites from Old Nusayan and Ancient Merv. The museum has collections of ancient Turkmen carpets, rare samples of national clothes and fabrics, ordinary furniture, objects made of precious metals, weapons, prizes.
The Museum of the President of Turkmenistan consists of three floors, two of which perpetuate the history of the development of the state from the day of the swearing-in of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The museum’s exposition is divided into 10 sections, which present donations from the public, foreign citizens, business groups and foreign government officials.
